Detroit Lions Flashback: Eric Hipple's Epic Debut E-mail

lion75.jpgNote: Here's the latest historical flashback as JackandTom.net celebrate the Detroit Lions' 75th Anniversary. For this one, we go back to 1981 when a unknown QB made his debut on national television.

Few Lion fans had ever heard of Eric Hipple before this game, and none have forgotten him since. He came to Detroit as an unsung fourth-round selection in the 1980 draft out of Utah State, and did not set foot on the field as a rookie. He was listed as the third-string QB behind Gary Danielson and Jeff Komlo going into the ‘81 season. However, when Danielson injured his wrist in a September 27 victory over the Raiders, and Komlo promptly led the Lions to two-straight defeats, leaving Detroit with a record of 2-4, Monte Clark decided he had nothing to lose and gave Hipple his first start . . . on Monday Night Football.

Uncle Sam to limit your speed ? E-mail

Written by The Constitutionalist

I have often wondered why the US Government allows automakers to manufacture cars which are capable of exceeding the maximum speed allowed.

It would sort of be like allowing a US maker to manufacturer to make a car without air bags or seat belts or a bumper..

Before the modern car computers, I rationalized by saying it would be too difficult to limit the speed, without compromising the performance of the car in different gears..   but that isn't the case anymore.

So when I saw Ford make this big announcement today first thing I thought was, I wonder how long till the govern the speed on ALL cars.

Then I caught a glimpse of it inside the same article..

"Our research and development office has been talking to Ford about it," said National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spokeswoman Elly Martin. "We are excited about this and very interested."

I know, they will spin this "we just want to keep our kids safe", but if they can keep kids safe..

Why wouldn't they keep everyone safe ?

Is Sports Recession Proof ? E-mail

You've probably seen curious things in recent days. Despairing traders with their heads in their hands on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Charter members of the Wall Street elite carrying their belongings in boxes as they walk out the doors of what used to be investment banks. House leaders strategizing across the aisle in an attempt to marshal the rank and file into action.

All very strange.

But none of that is more curious than the scene at Old Trafford a couple of Saturdays ago. As Manchester United, possibly the world's most valuable sports franchise and arguably the most famous one worldwide, took to its hallowed pitch, its home red shirts (an appropriate color, as it turns out) were emblazoned across the chests with the logo of American International Group, previously the largest insurance company in the U.S. and now a ward of the state. At the time of its collapse and public rescue, AIG was just midway through a four-year sponsorship deal with Man U that will pay the club upward of $100 million. Not that U.S. taxpayers' money is really going offshore, mind you, since Man U's owner is Malcolm Glazer, a Rochester-born businessman who also happens to own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Lions : Is it the Media's Fault ? E-mail
User Rating: / 0
Written by LansingSportsRage.com

Now.. right off the back, I realize that everything that has happen to the Lions isn't the media's fault.. I'm not saying that.

But in roughly 10 months, the Free Press along with the Detroit News drove Kwame Kilpatrick out of office... granted... he had committed felony crimes.

But aren't William Clay Ford & Matt Millen felons against the fans of Lions ?

Every year.. it seems like the newspapers and the radio stations buy into the Lions kool-aid and help spread the propaganda.

Mike O'Hara saying the Lions will win 10 games.. Mike Valenti saying the Lions should win 8 games.. Andy Beniot at WXYZ saying 10 wins.. Wayne Fontes Experience they will win 9 games.. Brian VanOchten predicted 7 wins.. Greg O'Connor predicted 11 wins.. Jamie Samuelsen predicted 6 wins.. Bob Wojnowski predicted the playoffs.. Caputo predicted the playoffs..

WHY ?

I'm not a Lions hater.. but I said plainly and clearly.. 3 wins (One of those was Atlanta) and for the most part I was laughed at.

WHY does the media drink the preseason kool aid.. and then help sell it to the fans ?

WHY ?

The baddest S.O.B to ever patrol an NFL secondary. He picked off fourteen passes as a rookie in 1951 - a record that still stands.
