Can We Send His Butt To Kentucky? E-mail

horsesI’m glad Tom Crawford’s Bucket List includes a visit to the Kentucky Derby. . . . He’d love to watch the race if they won’t let him run in it.

Since Churchill Downs is only No. 10 on his “Tom 10” list, it’s time to check his other nine dream destinations:

9. Butch Harmon’s School of Golf - Crawford might learn that The Masters and the U.S. Open aren’t scrambles.

8. The pits at Michigan International Speedway - Truth be told, he has always wanted to be a Jack-handler.

7. MSU’s Turfgrass Management classrooms - It’s time he gets a close-up look at the world’s finest football fields.

6. The Irish Guard at Notre Dame Stadium - Imagine Crawford leading the band through the tunnel to play the world’s greatest fight song.

5. The Tour de France - No one would have more fun demanding French toast, French fries and French vanilla ice cream at each meal.

4. The Woody Hayes Athletic Center - Everyone should see what it’s like to win a Michigan-Ohio State football game in this century.

3. The Jack Ebling Driving Experience - Crawford can learn how to handle a car at all speeds, occasionally at the right time.

2. The new U-M weight room - If he’s lucky, Crawford might get to kiss the feet of new strength and conditioning god Mike Barwis.

1. The Jack Breslin Student Events Center - Who wouldn’t want to witness Division I basketball? He might even see a 114-63 game.

My Ole' Kentucky Home E-mail

kd You know those sports events or venues where you just want to be able to say "been there, done that." A Cubs game at Wrigley, an ND football game in South Bend, or a hoop game at Madison Square Garden. I am three for three of those mentioned. There are others I can tick off as accomplished and many more not accomplished. One I want to be able to cross off the list is a trek to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.

And it's just not to soak in the atmosphere, people watch and see the fastest two minutes in sports. It's to hear "My Ole' Kentucky Home," while the 20 or so three-old thoroughbred horses get paraded out on to the track. Nothing more majestic looking than race horses being serenaded by The University of Kentucky or University of Louisville marching band (who's ever turn it is that year) to a version of "My Ole' Kentucky Home" before being guided into the starting gate. I am sure if I ever attend the Derby some day, that will cue up for some watery eyes by Yours Truly. Such a sap I am.
