You know those sports events or venues where you just want to be able
to say "been there, done that." A Cubs game at Wrigley, an ND football
game in South Bend, or a hoop game at Madison Square Garden. I am three
for three of those mentioned. There are others I can tick off as
accomplished and many more not accomplished. One I want to be able to
cross off the list is a trek to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.
And it's just not to soak in the atmosphere, people watch and see the
fastest two minutes in sports. It's to hear "My Ole' Kentucky Home,"
while the 20 or so three-old thoroughbred horses get paraded out on to
the track. Nothing more majestic looking than race horses being
serenaded by The University of Kentucky or University of Louisville
marching band (who's ever turn it is that year) to a version of "My Ole'
Kentucky Home" before being guided into the starting gate. I am sure if
I ever attend the Derby some day, that will cue up for some watery eyes
by Yours Truly. Such a sap I am.
