The Wings “Almost” Made Me a Hockey Fan |

I have admitted on the Jack and Tom Show and I will admit to
you on this blog, I am not the most avid hockey fan. Not even close. Just call
me flat-out indifferent to this sport where terms like “the crease” and “poke
check” and “odd man rush” confuse the hell outta me. I am a football/basketball
guy big time thru and thru, and everything else
pales.
But I will also admit, I was very happy for the City of Detroit and the Detroit Red
Wings for their fourth Stanley Cup title in the last 11 years. What an exciting
championship series it was to observe, even for a non-hockey person as me.
Watching Monday night’s triple OT loss (well, I watched until the completion of
the second overtime – I checked out at 12:15 a.m.) was incredibly engaging as
was Saturday night’s win (dodging the Penguin 5-3 man advantage) and of
course Wednesday night’s final 3-2
conquest.
The Wings have a great owner, a great general manager (Ken Holland might
be the best in professional sports) and they have a loyal & large fan base.
And when you pack fans along a victory parade route seven deep in 90-degree heat
with most wearing heavy and hot Wings jerseys, you know you have full fan dedication. There are 30 teams
in the NHL. But there is only one that deserves the nickname “Hockey Town”. And that’s the Motor City.
