umhelmet.png My kid (Cody) just completed his 5-day stint at the Michigan Football camp today. He is a sophomore (East Lansing High) cornerback. Here is what stood out in my mind about the camp from observing things on Sunday, and from hearing Cody's accounts this week.
There were 1200 kids -- 700 of those from out of state (truly a National camp) .....from grades incoming freshmen thru incoming seniors......100 coaches from all levels -- Division 1 level (obviously including Michigan) to 1-AA, Division 2 and 3 as well as high school...this camp is marked by great organization.......choreographing that many kids in position groups as smoothly as appeared was impressive... Yes, there were tons of Michigan propaganda thrown at these kids from lunch hour lessons of how to sing The Victors, to several Michigan video clips of the Capital One Bowl win over Florida and other Wolverine triumphs...The video I saw on Sunday that was shown the kids (enhanced by turning down the lights and hearing a Bo Schembechler voice-over at thousands of watts) was spine tingling...Rich Rodriquez gave a great speech to start the camp on Sunday, closed it on Thursday, and was present throughout the camp with each position group. Rich Rod is a branded name at this camp. It is the Rich Rodriquez Michigan Football camp, and the passing games in the evening are called "Rod Ball."...Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike Barwis is as crazy and intense as advertised...The construction going on down there at the athletic campus is mind-boggling. The new football building, which is supposed to be ready by the spring, is massive. It's a $40 million structure with a roof pitch steep enough to punt in... Michigan Stadium from a distance looks like an erector set -- with steel framework hovering over both the East and West grandstands... The Michigan football program is truly entering a new era. I am not promising it is going to be great, nor indicating it is going to be bad. I just can't tell at this stage. But it should be damn interesting and downright exciting. Can't wait for the Utah game on August 30th.
