In Michigan, since October 2003, there's been a diabolical little law in place called the, Michigan Driver's Responsibility Law. This devious program was put into effect to supposedly tax unsafe drivers for negligent or dangerous driving conduct. Sounds like a good idea in theory, but I’m seeing it more as a cash grab for the state. In fact, the driver responsibility program has brought in nearly $166 million for the state since fees began coming due in early 2004. "It's certainly been effective at raising revenues for the state of Michigan" said Republican Rep. Tom Pearce of Rockford. "Has it done anything to impact safety in the state of Michigan as far as our roads? We're not hearing that. And that's my biggest concern." And that's not even the biggest problem...Does this effect the guy making $100K a year? Not really. He just doesn't take a trip to Hawaii that year. But to the person living on $30K a year - you just took 10% of their total income. Because of a traffic ticket? A person comitting a felony offense will receive a smaller punishiment and fine then 3G. It creates an even larger safety risk for the average guy on the road. These motorists are still driving. Your kidding yourself if you think they stopped. They are out there with invalid licenses, without insurance, in unregistered vehicles. Here is a story of one man caught in the spider web of DRF The law is wrong, it is unfair and it needs to be repealed. Please sign the repeal petition online : |

Sounds like a good idea in theory, but I'm seeing it more as a grab for cash in
a state that really can't afford it.
