What do you folks think about this ?
Boston police are launching a program that will call upon parents in high-crime neighborhoods to allow detectives into their homes, without a warrant, to search for guns in their children's bedrooms.
In the next two weeks, Boston police officers who are assigned to schools will begin going to homes where they believe teenagers might have guns. The officers will travel in groups of three, dress in plainclothes to avoid attracting negative attention, and ask the teenager's parent or legal guardian for permission to search. If the parents say no, police said, the officers will leave.
From : Boston Globe
My first two thoughs :
1.) If they have reasonable information (thus probable cause) why wouldn't they just get a warrant ?
2.) This same program in St. Louis resulted in a 50% failure rate in finding guns.
A 50% failure/success rate is abisimal.. it means half the time the police incorrectly requested someone to waive their 4th amendement rights and resulted in an illegal search.
What would happen to the average police officer if half the cars he pulled over for suspected DUI, ended up not being drunk ?
If you think its okay to just randomly search these homes on hunches and scrapes of clues (information the police openly acknowledge would be insufficient to obtain a warrant) then why not extend it to every home, every car, every business.
